TechNerd Hits 50,000 Members — Here's What's Next
We crossed a major milestone this month. Here's a look at what the community has built, what we've learned, and what's coming next for trades education online.
When we launched TechNerd two years ago, the goal was simple: build a place where tradespeople could share real knowledge without paywalls, without algorithms pushing engagement bait, and without the condescension that plagues a lot of online technical communities.
This month, we crossed 50,000 active members. That number means something to us — not because of the vanity metric, but because of what those members have built together. Over 2 million posts. Hundreds of project threads. Dozens of live Q&A sessions. And thousands of people who learned something real and went and did it.
What's working
The welding and electrical groups have been the most active from the start. There's something about those trades — the combination of technical precision and physical craft — that attracts people who want to go deep. The quality of answers in those groups is genuinely impressive.
The BYO AI feature, launched last month, has been more popular than we expected. The idea is simple: bring your own API key, and get AI-assisted answers without TechNerd ever seeing or storing your key. It's a privacy-first approach that a lot of our members appreciate.
What's next
We're working on a few things. A proper project showcase feature — so members can document builds from start to finish and get feedback along the way. Better search across groups. And a mentorship matching system that pairs beginners with experienced tradespeople for one-on-one guidance.
